GLASS SCULPTURES

It was also crucial to have met Egidio Costantini, the Master of 'Fucina degli Angeli', who also worked for Chagall, Mirò, Fontana and Picasso. He chose a group of young and old contemporary painters and included me among his colleagues. He made me go to the furnaces in Murano to have sculptures made of blown glass, all round, tiles and bas-reliefs. This was an excellent test, because I had to prepare watercolour drawings, which I then studied with father Egidio Costantini and his team of master glassmakers, to make the sculpture from these drawings. The contact, let's say, with these people and with the environment of the 'Fucina degli Angeli' was unforgettable. Creating a glass artwork is an enormous thrill because glass not only has a third dimension, which is that of sculpture, but also a charm of its own. It offers different reflections depending on the angle of the light. It is very fragile and delicate, but it has an exhilarating nobility!
(Mario Lupo - 'Story Of Life, Story Of Painting')

Dear Mario,
These few lines, written almost spontaneously, but with real feeling, are meant as my tribute to the artist Mario Lupo. Indeed, these glass sculptures are more than an interpretation of your artistic genius. They have become an integral and living part of me because I feel them inside, and they fill my world. Thus were born the women with hollowed and pensive faces looking into the distance, the seagulls flying free in the sky, the seas clear and stormy at the same time, the pomegranates, fruits of the earth and fruits of life. After getting to know the man deeply, exploring his complex personality, understanding his world, then and only then did I understand everything about Mario Lupo. And I especially loved his soul, as transparent as glass and as pure as the sea he loved so much.
